Monday afternoon, the world lost another artist, activist, businessman, father, all in one. Nipsey Hussle was more than just an LA rapper. He was doing a lot for his community. To find out what Nipsey was doing, read writer Noel Austin’s article on Nipsey's contributions to his community here: https://thevoicedsociety.wixsite.com/thevoicedsociety/post/the-marathon-continues-nipsey-hussle-s-contributions-to-his-community

However, with the death of this icon, conversations about Hussle making a documentary on the life of Dr.Sebi arose.

Nipsey told The Breakfast Klub in 2018 that he was working on a documentary on the trial in 1985 when Dr. Sebi went to trial against New York because he put in a newspaper he cured AIDS. He beat his case and then proceeded to go to federal court where he beat that case as well.

Alfredo Bowman knew better as Dr. Sebi was a herbalist, naturalist, and pathologist from Honduras, who studied and observed herbs from different countries around the world. He came up with a method of healing the human body through herbs.

Sebi was diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, and obesity when he came to America. Being a self-educated man, Sebi found himself a herbalist in Mexico after having numerous unsuccessful treatments with doctors.

Being healed from his time there in Mexico, he “began creating natural vegetation cell food compounds geared for inter-cellular cleansing and the revitalization of all the cells that make up the human body.”

He later began sharing his compounds with others now known as Dr.Sebi’s cell food.

Bowman (Dr.Sebi) began selling a $1,500 package of all the thing he claimed cleansed the body by “breaking down acid, mucus, toxins, and calcifications.” He was marketing his products in America by the 1980s. He began putting advertisements in newspapers like the Village Voice and Amsterdam News claiming he could heal patients of AIDS, herpes, leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and other diseases. He also mentioned in his ads that he had previously cured AIDS.

Some of the famous clients that came to visit him included, Lisa Lopez, Michael Jackson, John Travolta, Eddie Murphy, and Steven Seagal.

In 1987, he was charged with practicing medicine without a license and taken to court in New York because of his ads. According to the Brooklyn Supreme Court, he was found not guilty. According to a New Amsterdam report on the trial, undercover agents set up recorders in Bowman’s institute to catch him making medical diagnoses. It didn’t work.

Dr.Sebi had gone through more obstacles eventually resulting in his arrest in 2016 for money laundering with the Honduran Government. It was said he that he attempted to transfer to a private plane in the Honduran airport from a commercial flight also traveling with $37,000 in cash. While he was arrested, he contracted pneumonia and died in 2016 at the age of 82.

Even though Dr.Sebi is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his website where you can still purchase his products, and follow his nutritional advice.

As for Nipsey Hussle, the marathon continues.
