It is still the beginning of 2019 and that means that it is award season and more new movie trailers are being released. Jordan Peele the mastermind behind a box office hit Get Out posted a picture of the poster for his next upcoming film Us on his Instagram in mid-2018. With Get Out being a great success for Peele, everyone was hype for what the director had next for another horror movie. With all the anticipation of what this film could possibly be about Peele then drops the trailer for the Film on Christmas day as a gift to fans.
With the trailer out we see a lot from the 2-minute trailer. We see that the main protagonists in this film are a black family. With Winston Duke playing the father and Lupita Nyong'o playing the mother. And with that, this trailer Jordan Peele continues to show us that great movies can be made by having a majority black cast and it not being categorized as a “black movie”. This movie doesn't show any stereotypes or anything like that it just shows a normal black family and it's not trying to push it in the audiences face that the main protagonist is black. Peele does show little black cultural moments in the trailer. Like in the beginning when the whole family is in the car singing I Got 5 on it by, Luniz, or when Winston Duke goes outside to confront the other family in a Howard sweatshirt. Showing that Winston's character is an alumnus from Howard University (a prestigious HBCU). Little things like that which pay homage to black cultural things subtly are great.
There was this stigma in Hollywood that great grossing film can't have a majority black cast and do well in the box office. And in the past year, Black Panther shredded that idea and so has Peele’s first hit Get Out. This movie is going to show us one that having a great movie doesn't mean you can't have an all-black cast. Also, this movie is for everyone to enjoy as well. While it is an all-black cast the academy and Hollywood shouldn't write it off as just another “black movie” this is going to be a film that can be enjoyed by every horror movie enthusiast everywhere. Peele is also bringing fresh ideas to the horror movie genre. Recently you see a lot of studios rebooting past movies or making multiple sequels. Peele is bringing a fresh take to horror movies by being an original movie. Us is going to be a great movie to start of 2019 with and another opportunity for Jordan Peele to show us how great of a director he is. I believe everyone should go out and see this great film.
