Well-known actor and filmmaker, Tyler Perry, is officially retiring the fan-favorite character ‘Madea’. After 20 years of providing laughs to audiences across the country, Perry has finally decided that Madea’s time is up.
Madea was born in his production called “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”. The character was a result of Perry wanting to introduce a character that was a little more lighthearted. She was actually supposed to be a one-time character, but the audience loved her so much, she stuck. Perry says Madea is a combination of “his mother being the wisdom of Madea, while his aunt Mayola is the wig, voice, and the gun in the purse. Madea is the PG-related version of Mayola.” he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2006.

The iconic character is best described as “the grandmother people long for and that people use to have.” She speaks from love, wisdom, and displays fearless characteristics. Madea gives great encouragement through her scenes while keeping it real. In the movies“ I Can Do Bad All By Myself”, “Madea’s Family Reunion" and "Madea's Big Happy Family," the importance of family is without a doubt the theme. Madea films show how family members can go through rough patches together and argue as most families do, but at the end of the day they are inseparable and always come through for each other. A concept many families can relate to.
Another common theme in a lot of his movies where audiences get to see the “tough” side of Madea is to “not take crap” from anyone. Madea does not let anyone walk all over her. She always demands respect and will teach you respect if you don’t already have it down.
She reminds many of a “Madea” they might know whether it’s in their own family or a lady down the street. These Tyler Perry movies along with many others and the message they share are the reason why they are so popular. Individuals always learn something from Perry’s films.
Madea’s last movie is now in theaters with “A Madea Family Funeral”, where she is rumored to be killed off. The movie, interestingly enough, was actually shot two years ago. Although Madea is what launched Perry’s career, he claims that he is just “tired of playing her and does not want to be her age still playing her.”

It hasn’t hit many that Madea has been around since 1999 and will not be returning in the future, but her character has had a great impact in many households worldwide and we will just have to wait and see where Tyler Perry takes us next.
