How to Find Your Own Style

Updated: Jan 1, 2020

Finding your own personal style can be challenging at times. Here are some tips to how to successfully find your style! Number one: if you like it, wear it. There’s always going to be times when you’ll question if your fit is “gram worthy” and the answer is: YES! If you’re confident in it that’s all that matters. It is important to realize that nobody’s opinion matters except your own. Note that it’s perfectly fine to be inspired by someone else but always add your own twist.

Your style plays a tremendous role on your identity. You can wake up one day and be in the mood to wear preppy clothing, and then wake up the next day and feel like wearing streetwear. Your style can be based on your mood, weather, or plans for the day. 2019 has taught me to try new things. You’ll be surprised at your creations. Accessories can make a big difference. Finding your own style is an experimental process; you have to try things in order to know what you like and don’t like.📷

Start by asking yourself why you like what you like. Why do you always end up buying that specific piece? What about that specific article can’t you get enough of? If you always find yourself buying and wearing a certain thing, it could be because you like the way you look in them or the way they fit you. Maybe you can’t get enough of them because they make you comfortable.

Find your style icons. Look up images of them on pinterest and save whatever stands out to you. Then notice what each outfit has in common. When you feel confident in what you have pieced together, that’s your style. Find a signature look. For example, mine is a handbag. It not only makes me feel complete, but also secure. Your signature look is something you are known for and makes you, you! Creating a signature look is adding your twist to the outfit.

Lastly, wear clothes that compliment your strengths and know yourself. Note what your personality is and see if your style aligns with it. You should know what colors inspire you. On this journey of finding your own style, you want to keep track of what prints, colors, and fabrics make you feel most confident. Once you have a good understanding of what you’re comfortable in, you have ruled out the things you don’t see fit. I can honestly say that the hardest part of finding your style is not genuinely being yourself. You won’t find your style by copying someone else's.

Keep in mind:

Less is not always better.

It’s ok to try new things.

Do not seek approval.

It’s ok to be inspired but be careful not to copy an entire look.

Don’t try too hard.

Be yourself.

Step out of the box.

Add accessories.
